Awesome and extremely informative article. I was always confused by this ailment, but now I'm much more informed and can start to correct the issues I have with running.

Hi Angie, The hormones that prepare your body for childbirth can increase the elasticity of ligaments which can lead to laxity in weightbearing joints. So yes, it is possible that your "severe overpronation" has increased. Because an overpronated foot is less efficient absorbing impact and supporting the body's weight a stable shoe and for some, a stable insole or orthotic can help compensate by correcting alignment issues. I treat many runners and walkers who are able to remain very active with the right amount of correction. Don't be discouraged, drug store inserts are rarely supportive enough for active individuals or severe overpronators primarily because they are just flimsey foam devices that do nothing to improve alignment. It is rare that a I would recommend that a person stop running so I would suggest to you that you seek out a sports medicine professional in your area (check out the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine at www.AAPSM.org) and have them assess you foot type and then make footwear, insole and/or other therapeutic recommendations.

Running barefoot or with minimalist shoes on a natural surface is a great training tool as long as it is done safely. I use my Vibram Fivefingers or Terra Plana Aquas for 1-3 miles one or two times a week on the grass. Unfortunately, I have treated some nasty puncture wounds on the feet of a few barefooters - it's not just glass but also sticks and rocks that can cause serious injuries.

I prefer running barefoot than running in shoes. I am much comfortable with it. Though at first barefoot running was not that easy but when you get used to it, everything will be fine. Thanks for sharing this post anyways. I'll keep this in mind :)

I have sever overpronation. It has been getting worse the past few years. I've read that child birth helps this occur! I have to wear shoes in the house all the time or I can't walk or stand by the end of the day. I am trying to understand how I can begin running again, which I used to love. Is it enough to find the right running shoe? Or will running period damage my feet and body furter? It's very hard because I hate going for walks with my kids and shopping. I do use drug store inserts that help but it's still not enough.
